Newbiggin Church Point

Posted by: on 23-01-2005

Newbiggin Church Point is an unfamiliar territory for me as I have only fished it once before. However, with so many good reports going around it was time for me to give it a try once again. We turned up around 4pm stopping at the local fishing tackle shop to pickup up some rag, lug, crab and squid.

The weather was not too bad with some sun coming past the thick clouds. The wind was weak but the cold breeze was happy to let us know it was there. We took our gear from the car and headed towards the church point, the tide was at is lowest.

We set-up just behind the church and got our rigs baited up and cast out straight in front of us. As usual we sat down to have a coffee and reflect on the days gone.

After 15 minutes I decided to re-cast only to find my weight was stuck so it was time to loose my first rig. However, it was not to end there as every other cast I made the same story followed. I tried every possible combination of rigs to try and save some of my tackle but nothing worked. On the other hand my fishing pal was having some very good bites but nothing was getting hooked.

As night approached the tide turned pushing us back very quickly towards the church. This was not the only problem as the wind suddenly started to pick up. I mean gale force winds! It was a challenge staying on your feet never mind casting. My last cast ended up going sideways instead of forwards, hope that gives you some idea of the winds we faced. At around 6.30pm we decided to pack up and get out before it was too late.

It just goes to show you that the sea is an extreme force of nature and should never be taken for granted. Our session ended without a fish but it was nice to be home in front of the fire.
