Fishing whitburn & one that got away - 05-02-2006

It’s been 2 weeks since the last time I have been out fishing and many months since I landed a decent fish. This time of year is very busy for me work wise, so fishing has to be put on hold. However, with our NE-Fishing Sea League coming to a close the work was not going to stand in my way.
Basic principals on how fishfinders work. - 25-01-2006

The thrill of any fishing adventure begins with finding the right place to wet your line. Fishfinder allow anglers to quickly identify key targets and structure, as well as fish. A Fish Finder is a subset of a group of instruments called sonars. A Sonar consists of a transmitter, transducer, receiver and display. In the simplest terms, an electrical impulse from a transmitter is converted into a sound wave by the transducer and sent into the water. When this wave strikes an object, it rebounds.

Free spring salmon fishing on the cork blackwater in 2006 - 05-12-2005

The number of spring salmon that have been running the Munster Blackwater river right from the beginning of the season has been extremely encouraging in previous years. This has not been reflected in the catches on the Blackwater Lodge Fishery because there has been few anglers fishing at the start of the season. The Lodge has an enviable selection of fishing – 16 beats comprising some 14 miles of private fishing extending over approximately 40 river miles.

Cod fishing is looking good! - 21-11-2005

Last winter for me and many other sea anglers was a very disappointing season in terms of cod fishing but very productive for whiting and coalfish. The cod stocks have been reduced in the last 10 years and this has been reflected in our catch rates.

THE PRESERVED SOUTHERN CHALK STREAMS HOLD SOME OF THE LARGEST GRAYLING IN THE COUNTRY BUT HAVING SAID THAT ‘FLY ONLY’ SEEMS TO BE THE MAIN CHOICE BUT MY OPTION IS TO USE THE HUMBLE WORM OR MAGGOT WHERE I CAN. Trolling on loch awe and a first trout - 21-10-2005

The week had started well when we arrived at our Chalet on Loch Awe. Although Black clouds and a thick mist obscured the sheer size of this place, little did I know that I should consider that a plus! With rain beating down, and a strong North Westerly, it was decided to chill out, and keep the rods in for the time being.
Rain brings new breath of life! - 13-10-2005

The summer months have ended and we are now at that magical time of year for us coarse anglers. For me October is one of the best months in our coarse fishing season, where hot Days are long gone and have been replaced with a fresh cooling breeze. The falling rain will give our rivers that all needed lift as well as re-oxygenate the water. This new breath of life will bring many species out of their summer rest and feeding in the same enthusiastic way they did in the early spring. With the winter only around the corner the fish are looking to feed hard in the next few weeks in hope of stocking before the natural food becomes in short supply.
Salmon season coming to a close! - 13-10-2005

It?s has been a hard year for us salmon anglers! The summer fishing was badly affected by low water in our rivers making it almost impossible for the fish to move upstream. The rivers around North East dropped off early July and have only now started to recover. We have seen 4 inches of Rainfall in the last few days lifting the river levels as well as re-oxygenating the water.
Cracking start to the cod season - 13-10-2005

The autumn is upon us and once again the hardy sea anglers are out in the search for that double figure cod? The season has gone off to a great start with most competition producing at least one cod. The pleasure anglers around the region have also had great success with one angler catching 5 cod for 16lb from Newbiggin. In fact most venues are producing including Whitburn where one lucky angler landed a 4lb Red Cod from the rocks.

Getting into fishing on a budget! - 06-10-2005

There are many curious people out there in the world wondering if they themselves would enjoy fishing as much as us anglers. Unfortunately, many of them never get a chance to try it usually because they are not prepared to spend a lot of money on tackle before getting taste for the sport. It does not have to be that way! There are many different roads towards becoming an angler and I am going to cover some of them.

Newbiggin sea open shore competition - 02-10-2005

Today I was taking part in my first ever Sea Open Shore competition. It was a fairly early start for a Sunday morning but I was all excited and ready to catch that big lost cod. I met up with Bob and Darren (NE-Fishing members) at the Boat House Club in Newbiggin by the sea at around 8am. The competition was running from 8.30am to 12.30pm.

It was my earliest start this year! I was out of bed at 5.30 am on Saturday morning ready and excited for the fishing session in front of me. I don?t get enough opportunities to fish the River Tees and when I do I like to try that little bit harder to catch my targeted species.

Angel of the north fishing - 07-05-2005

April the 30th was an exciting day for me as the Angel of the North fishing Lakes finally opened their doors to anglers. I have been looking forward to this day since my first report early on in January of this year. With so much varying feedback flying around it was time to finally test the water and see if the lakes would live up to their expectation.

Bob and I set off about 9.30am and arrived at our fishing spot about 10.30am. We Looked at the Heugh but with the waves crashing about 10ft over the top we decided to fish a little pier in between the heugh and middleton pier.

Cambois rocks - 13-04-2005

Friday?s fishing trip took Andy and me to Cambois Rock in hope of catching our first Cod of this year. We arrived at the Cambois just after 7.30pm only to find waves crashing over the wall and on to us and it was not even high tide.
Qeii pike fishing - 13-04-2005

My initial plan for the weekend was to return to River Tees and try for pike once again but the bad weather towards the end of the week made most rivers un-fishable. I was forced to look into fishing Stillwater rather then a river.
Silkworth lake - 13-04-2005

My phone alarm rudely wakes me up at 7.00 am on Sunday morning. Through my sleepy eyes I look around to find bright blue sky outside. I am straight out of the bed and into the kitchen to make myself a coffee.

Newbiggin church point - 23-01-2005

Newbiggin Church Point is an unfamiliar territory for me as I have only fished it once before. However, with so many good reports going around it was time for me to give it a try once again. We turned up around 4pm stopping at the local fishing tackle shop to pickup up some rag, lug, crab and squid.
